My Mixed Media Fail...

Yep....that's right readers I am sharing with you what I consider to be my epic mixed media fail.  I was all ready to either go wash all this off or bin it, when my bestie Faith convinced me that it wasn't a fail at all and that I should share it with you all and let you guys be the judge.

Those of you who follow me regularly know that I am only just beginning this mixed media journey and I don't have a lot of confidence in my creations.  I begin with such high hopes and a wonderful picture in my head, but what I end up with is never what I see in my minds eye.  This can be said for this project.  It just evolved and no matter how hard I tried to "rescue" it the worse it seem to get.

I did something I have never done before and that is I started with a black base....and layered up a variety of bits n bobs, charms, burlap, modelling paste, and resin pieces.  Here are few process pics I managed to take along the way.

I then gave this all another liberal coating of black gesso....sorry guys no pics of it at this stage, but it was tooo dark for me so I dry brushed over some white gesso and got this....

Then I set to work spraying....first with a couple of gold sprays from Lindy's Stamp Gang.  I used Gold Doubloon and Gossamer Gold.

Then I reached for my all time favourite, Tibetan Poppy Teal and Autumn Crimson Maple and this it what it looked like....

However I wasn't happy with that so I pulled out my copper metallic ink pad and rubbed it over all the raised surfaces and heat dried it,

but I still wasn't happy with it so I give it one more spray of the Autumn Crimson Maple and after heat drying it I lightly spritzed it with Burnished Brass.

I have tried taking photo's from various angles and at different times of the day to try and get a true depiction of what it looks like, but to no avail.

I even tried a white background with the mid afternoon sun coming into my room, but still it shows up much brighter than in real life....

So this is it... the final product.  I have been staring at it for about a week now and it is slowly growing on me. It still isn't what I set out to create or what I saw in my minds eye, but it is what is.

    1. Wow! Thanks Margaret. I love mixed media, but sometimes I swear it doesn't love me. Plus this form of "art" is right out of my comfort zone. I am going to try and again, except this time I will use a white background and see how that goes. Thank you for taking the time to come over and check out all my other pics. I really appreciate you and all your feedback. (((Hugs))) Kimi xx

  2. I'm glad you shared too Kimi! My mixed media projects seldom turn out the way I thought they would. I guess this is how our individual styles evolve. Keep at it Girlfriend!! xx

  3. Oh Kimi, this is INCREDIBLE! It may not have turned out as you pictured but I don't think any mixed media do, the beauty is via your techniques, layers, experimenting etc, it's taken on a magnificent personality all of it's own! The colours are gorgeous (& I zoomed it), textures are wonderful & that face? Totally rocks. As do all your embellies. I would be chuffed to bits if this were mine. So pleased you took friend's advice & shared. Fantastic!

  4. Gorgeous piece - you've achieved 'by accident' what many artists work towards for years! Well done.
